Name: MSGIC Education Caucus
Purpose:
The purpose of the MSGIC Education Caucus is to promote GIS education within Maryland.
What we strive to do:
The MSGIC Education Caucus strives to ensure that all higher education providers of GIS in Maryland be aware of MSGIC and encourage information about MSGIC be disseminated to staff and students. These providers include not just GIS/Geography-specific programs, but also related fields such as urban planning, landscape architecture, environmental studies, and other fields in which GIS courses may be offered. Ideally, these institutes of higher education are aware of MSGIC and the benefits conferred with membership such as jobs, conferences, awards, professional development, etc.
MSGIC also strives to promote GIS education at high schools and other pedagogical institutions in addition to higher education.
Education Caucus Chair:
The current chair of the Education Caucus for 2022-2023 is Andrew Bernish, AICP / GISP. In addition to working as a GIS Analyst and Transportation Planner with KFH Group and the MDOT Transportation Secretary’s Office, Andrew teaches GIS at the University of Maryland (College Park) and Urban Planning at George Washington University. In the role of Education Caucus Chair, Andrew strives to:
- Promote GIS education within Maryland with an emphasis on professional development.
- Attend and Represent the Education Community at all monthly MSGIC Executive Committee Meetings
- Attend and Represent the Education Community at All MSGIC Quarterly Meetings
- Inform Caucus Members of MSGIC, Federal, State, Local and Other News and Activities
- Solicit Educational Interest From Members and Coordinate Issues with Training Subcommittee (Formerly the Education Subcommitee)
Currently, the Education Caucus is working on an online survey for members to complete regarding GIS educational programs within the state of Maryland. Please stay tuned for this update and drop the caucus a line!
